WSIB Promotes Workplace Safety With Incentive Programs

No Such Thing as an Accident

The WSIB in Ontario has the strong belief that there is no such thing as an accident. By utilizing proper on-going workplace safety and injury prevention training programs and procedures, and by employees diligently implementing each, the WSIB states that all accidents are preventable.

According to the WSIB website, “A safe workplace is every worker's right. It's the employer's responsibility to provide proper training. It's everyone's responsibility to take it seriously.”

The Ontario Ministry of Labor and WSIB have regulations in place that provide for workplace safety, as well as workman compensation benefits in the event of injury. Non-compliance or violation of these regulations can result in fines of up to $25,000 per offense and up to 6 months jail time; and up to $100,000 per violation for corporate offenders.

WSIB Incentive Programs

To encourage employers to provide workplace safety and injury prevention training, for the purpose of reducing injury and the number of benefit claims, the WSIB offers incentive programs:

? New Experimental Experience Rating (NEER) Program – offering non-construction industry employers (who pay $25,000 per year or more in premium) rebates for promoting and maintaining a good health and safety record.

? CAD-7 – an incentive program for employers in the construction sector, who have been in business for at least 1 year and pay more than $25,000 per year in premiums. Premium rebates are earned by promoting and maintaining a good health and safety record.

? Merit Adjusted Premium (MAP) plan – for small businesses that pay between $1,000 and $25,000 per year in premiums. Premium rebates are offered for promoting and maintaining a good health and safety record.

Additional incentive programs include the Safe Communities Incentive Program (SCIP), the Safety Groups Program, and the Workwell safety evaluation program.
