WHMIS Course

The WHMIS Course has been designed to meet the minimum requirements of the WHMIS Regulations Regulation 860/90), it provides important information to employers and employees “those exposed to or likely to be exposed to a hazardous material in the workplace”. All employees in all provinces in Canada, who are working with hazardous materials, must be trained. The presence of hazardous materials in the workplace could impact everyone in the workplace if there was a fire, evacuation, chemical spill leak or emission etc. It is up to the employer to determine training requirements in consultation with the worker health and safety representative or the Joint Health and Safety Committee.

WHMIS – Is the Law for all workplaces. This program helps workers to reduce the risk of a workplace injury with the right to know – workers have a right to refuse any unsafe work.

 
   
 

To make WHMIS a reality in Canada and a model for the World, amendments were needed to change the current law.

This was achieved by means of two separate packages of amendments; one was passed by the Federal Government of Canada and the other was passed by the Ontario’s Legislator (Provincial).

The Federal Law package was called BillC-70. BillC-70 was passed on June 30, 1987 but it took effect on October 31, 1988. It created the Hazardous Product Act, the Controlled Products Regulation, and the Hazardous Material Information Review Act and amends the Canada Labour Code.

WHMIS applies to all workplaces in Canada and is a model for the world.
